Teaching Philosophy:

Cultivating Artistry and Wellness Through Music and Yoga

I am dedicated to fostering a learning environment that empowers students to reach their highest potential as musicians and individuals.

As a professor of oboe, my teaching philosophy is grounded in the belief that the pursuit of musical excellence should not only encompass technical mastery and artistic expression but also holistic well-being.

Student-Centered Learning:

Every student is unique and by getting to know the different goals, styles and challenges of each, we foster a collaborative atmosphere in our studio that encourages students to think creatively, express fully and share their insights, supporting one another and sharing in their successes.

Musical Mastery and Expression:

I am a firm believer that one's fundamentals must be in order to be able to efficiently approach our instrument. I love oboe pedagogy at all levels, from helping future teachers navigate how to teach the oboe to beginners all the way up to the finest detail in professional-level players. My role as professor is to guide students on a journey of self-discovery while encouraging them to find their creative voices.

Yoga for Musicians:

As a practitioner of yoga and meditation, these things naturally blend into my pedagogy. These daily practices provide invaluable benefits like breath control, enhanced body awareness, and reduced performance stress. Incorporating these in my pedagogy allows students to find greater ease and freedom in their playing, allowing them to find more beautiful sounds and the ability to express their musical voices.

Lifelong Learning:

The ongoing pursuit of knowledge enriches my teaching. Staying current and relevant in my own playing, learning, and pedagogy helps me to best serve the needs of my students.

In essence, my teaching philosophy embodies the synergy of musical excellence and holistic well-being. By seamlessly weaving the transformative practices of yoga into the fabric of musical mastery, my aim is twofold:

to foster accomplished performers and to cultivate resilient, mindful individuals.
